Question 1.

Question 1: What is your belief concerning one person performing the multiple roles of creator, accelerator, and sustainer? Do you feel you are capable of performing all of these roles? If not, which do you think fits you best?

Based on our readings to date it seems the leadership-who-can-do-all is the exception not the rule. Leaders tend to have specific skill sets suitable for specific stages of a business. For instance the creation and growth stages are dynamic, fast business periods with many things happening at once and leaders have to be fast thinkers and creative in their ability to craft solutions to problems. Moving into a mature stage of a business, delegation with control is needed.

During our MBA classes 715, 725 and 735 I found myself getting wrapped up in the excitement of the ideas and trying to problem solve to further growth. I can truly understand the excitement these periods bring to leaders. This “high” is contrasted with 745 and mature companies. Sure there is continued innovation and growth but most resources are needed just to manage and control the core business. If I were to lead an organization in either of these stages, I would be at the front line where the rubber meets the road, and leave the actual managing of things and people to those who enjoy those activities.
